Meet Kelsey Solway – 2015 Winner

2015 Rose Nolan Scholarship winner Kelsey Solway is a member of Siksika First Nation in Alberta. She is in her fourth year in the Bachelor of Communication program at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

Kelsey was raised on a ranch and credits her happy childhood to her parents-through her hardworking dad and creative mom for being the backbone of her success.

Kelsey’s accomplishments include helping organize a Flood Relief Benefit concert headlined by Corb Lund and Ian Tyson for the Siksika Nation, which raised $34,000. She also has won the Strategic Alliance of Broadcasters for Aboriginal Reflection bursary.

As well, she has had some of her journalistic work published in The Calgary Journal, CTV2, and the Prairie Post. Kelsey also moved to Yellowknife, N.W.T and interned with CBC where she reported and broadcasted with CBC Radio, CBC North and CBC Aboriginal.

She hopes her work as a journalist inspires her two siblings and other youth around Alberta to “stay humble, hit the books and make your mom proud.”
