Celebrate The Torch0

It’s not every year or even every four years that the Olympic Torch Relay is run through Sault Ste Marie but January 2nd 2010 the community will be able to celebrate the Torch’s arrival in the city.
Trevor Zachary, Co-Chair of the Olympic Torch Relay Task Force appeared before council Monday evening to request the closing of Queen St for the evening as well as $5.000 to offset the cost of the fireworks.
The Essar Centre will be celebrations headquarters for the evening with entertainment and fireworks. “We’re looking forward to a fabulous, fabulous event.” Zachary told council. Country artist Tara Oram will return to the Sault for the celebrations, Ted Nolan will provide an Aboriginal welcome. Sault Ste Marie’s own Jessica Tuomela a paralympic athlete will carry the torch.
Ward Two Councilor Myers told council that the Family Fun night was to be held in Sault Michigan this year on New Year’s Eve however because of the economic conditions in Sault Michigan they requested they skip the event this year.
Myers pointed out the Torch celebrations are just two days later so they will replace the International Family Fun Night. Myers also asked that an invitation be forwarded to the residents of Sault Michigan to join the celebration.
Zachary hopes that the event entices all the community to Queen St that evening to show their support and celebrate the 2010 Olympics.
