Background:
This past spring (March 2009) the Ted Nolan Foundation partnered with Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation in forming a leadership camp for Aboriginal youth.
50 students from the Algoma District School Board (ADSB) and Huron-Superior Catholic District School Boards (HSCDSB) will attend the leadership camp. The camp is called Onondaga Farm and is the newest of the Tim Horton camps, built in 2002. It is in St. Georges Ontario (near Cambridge/Brantford). The camp facility can house 220. The 50 Sault Ste. Marie area students will be the only ones there that week along with their counsellors and ADSB and HSCDSB Aboriginal Lead Teachers (Carol Trudeau-McEwan and Mona Jones, respectively). Students will attend from Thursday October 22nd, returning Monday October 26th with a full agenda each day.
The overall focus of this opportunity is to build Leadership Skills as well as working on team-building, confidence and independence. Campers will be challenged to step out of their comfort zone. Daily programs focus on 1) Creative Arts; 2) Environment; 3) Agriculture (it is a working farm with cattle/lambs/horses); 4) Astronomy (huge, housed telescope; one of the largest in the area); 5) Recreation & Adventure including rock & tower climbing; archery; paddling; orienteering.
Tim Horton’s Foundation has made a 5-year commitment to the Ted Nolan Foundation and each year, will add an additional 50 students. Sandra and Ted Nolan hope that as the numbers of students expand, more schools throughout the district will be able to participate. ADSB and HSCDSB are both very thankful to the Ted Nolan Foundation for initiating this partnership which benefits our students.
